Fauvism in Gouache

Let's copy André Derain

Let’s turn up the color and throw out the rulebook (just for a bit).

This 3-part gouache class is a playful, hands-on introduction to painting in the spirit of the Fauvists, those wild, color-loving artists who weren’t afraid to make the trees blue, the skies orange, or the cats… purple.

In this class, you’ll get three full, real-time tutorials to guide you through the Fauvist approach step by step.
You’ll learn how to loosen up, simplify what you see, and use bold color to express emotion and energy, without getting bogged down in realism or rules.

Here’s what’s inside:

1. Copy a Fauvist Masterpiece
We’ll start by studying a painting by André Derain (yes, one of the original Fauvists). This is a relaxed copy session where you’ll learn how he used color, composition, and brushwork, and how to recreate those effects using gouache. It’s like art school, but without the pressure.

2. Paint a Fauvist Landscape
Next, we’ll use one of my own reference photos and paint a vibrant, expressive landscape in the Fauvist style. You’ll learn how to interpret a scene with bold, unexpected color and playful shapes, rather than just copying what you see.

3. Create a Fauvist Cat Portrait
Yes, we’re painting a cat! (Fauvist-style, of course.) This final tutorial brings everything together, allowing you to explore what happens when you apply these ideas to something personal. Expect color experiments, lots of layering, and a good dose of feline attitude.

All tutorials are real-time, step-by-step, and beginner-friendly.

You don’t need to be a color theory expert, and you definitely don’t need to be a Fauvism scholar.
You just need a few basic gouache supplies and a sense of curiosity.

This class is perfect for you if you want to:

•Explore color in a bolder, freer way
•Loosen up your brushwork
•Bring more joy and energy into your painting
•Learn by doing, not just reading about it
•Try something new that could influence your personal style

What you’ll need:

Gouache, paper, brushes, and a willingness to play.
